Derrin was sitting in the cafeteria in the common grounds after the training had been done for the day. He was tried. Not just from the training but from a very restless night. He leaned against his arms and yawned. He played with his food a little more than eating it but occasionally put some things in his mouth.
He heard a loud crash of something and jumped and turned around, one of the people who served food dropped something. His heart was racing a bit and he was a little out of breath. He felt like the games were getting to him. He sat down and closed his eyes. He sighed a bit and then started to rub his shoulders. “I am way too tensed up about this.”
If any of the other tributes saw him freak out like that his whole image might have been compromised. It was not that he was scared of anyone else or worried. What bothered him the most was the watching and not knowing if anyone said anything truthful?
He picked up a spoon and started to tap to a beat of music in his head. It probably sounded terrible but at least he knew that no one would really pay attention. Once he saw someone walk in he would stop but not until then. He was happiest hearing something going on.
“Do one of the other tributes play music? Maybe I should just sit and listen to him or her.”
He chuckled to himself and continues to tap and eat occasionally. He knew that dinner was being served in the common room but he decided that things would be better if he just stayed out of the limelight for a bit.
He wanted to keep his shirt on for once.

Coming back from the roof and heading out to the archery range to meet a certain someone Millie noticed someone sitting all by his self. "Shouldn't the tributes be eating dinner together right now?"
Two seconds later when she realized that neither was she in the dining hall she figured she might as well see who it was.
Peering through the low light of the evening Millie recognized Derrin the boy from the roof. "He is such an enigma," she thought to herself, "it seems like he really wants to be part of something yet he always tries to be alone."
She considered going over to him but reconsidered. He seemed off put when he left the roof. And what was with that weird warning he gave me. Millie felt her face grow warm. And that pat on the head. I mean there was nothing to it but it seemed to mean something to him which just made Millie feel like it should mean something to her as well.
Millie snapped out of her own head and back to reality. Oh crap! She had just been standing there staring at him for the last ten minutes. "Ok Millie," she thought to herself frantically, "you can do this just say something to make this less awkward. You're good at talking. Anything."
"It's dark out isn't it?"
"Damn..."

Derrin had been tapping his spoon and honestly just jamming out which of course without an audience meant that no one would tell him he was terrible. To be fair if the hunger games were a musically battle he would grab a knife and just cut his wind pipe. He was not musical and he was also not very sentimental. Yes he displayed emotion all the time because his district was full of emotionless slobs but that also did not really push him to be emotional in terms of feeling for people.
He could be ruthless and unforgiving to those who deserved it. He always wanted to get to know people so he could judge him properly. Ever since the accident he tried to never not smile. He needed to be the emotion of his whole family not just him.
He shifted a little bit when he thought he saw someone run by that was a tribute but then he noticed that it was indeed Millie, whom he had seen once or twice but actually got to speak to just that night. She seemed to be staring at him as if questioning things.
Eventually the silence ended and she seemed startled and then said, it’s dark out isn’t it. Derrin paused for a second and then looked out the window, then turned back to her and responded, “As dark as the Capitol can get when they party all the time.”
Millie was from district one, her partner was Decimus and together they were, well, the dream team. District one was always raised up high but this also put a ton of pressure on them. It must be just as hard to be a Capitol favorite as it is to be a Capitol dropout.
He blinked a few times, and then slide the chair out across from him with his foot. He opened his arms and after rubbing the weariness from her face and energy seemed to be restored to himself. He closed his eyes and gave her a smile, “If you want to join me you can, however if you also have somewhere to be I will not judge your decision.”
It was a simple invitation and if she wanted to she could stay and if not she could leave.

"Oh Derrin. Hi," the worlds just kind of tumbled out of her mouth. "I've kind I been looking for you," she said moving sit next to him.
"Look I know I really don't know you and you really don't know me but I trust Kimber more than I probably trust my own district mate." Millie took a minute to really take Derrin in. He was an odd duck but from the noises she heard when she stumbled upon him he really did march to the beat of his own drum
And it was people like that she needed to make her plan a reality.
"I'm forming an alliance and Kimber really trusts you. If she trusts you I trust you. I'm not pretending like I know you or I have some new found respect for you," she paused for a moment and met his eyes, "but I am saying I trust you."
She stood up and extended her arm as if to shake his hand, "We'd be pleased if you would join us." Millie smiled, "we do things a bit differently."
She met his eyes and grinned, "you'll see."

Derrin cocked his head a little to the side when she mentioned that she was looking for him. What ever could she want with him? She sat down next to him and he felt a little bit awkward. Needless to say he was happy he had a shirt on. He felt that his mentor actually meant for him to never have a shirt on but, he just really could not do it in front of girls.
Derrin nodded to her when she mentioned that she trusted Kimber more than her own District mate, he was unsure if she was lying or not because he did not really try to read her face but he knew that somewhere he really should be doing this right now.
When she spoke next it sort of slapped Derrin in the face. She trusted him only because of Kimber and even then it was based on Kimber’s trust of him which he was still unsure of.
She stood up and with the most confidence he had seen since Decimus she extended his arm and offered for him to join them. He blinked a few times in quick succession and knew that this was why District one was so strong, and maybe not even the district maybe it was just Millie. He lowered his head, took her hand and stood up.
He looked her in the eye and said, “You better show me. If I ever see your face in the sky or I find your eyes without this strength in them…I’ll never forgive you.” He patted her hand he was holding with his other one and simply smiled to her.
“Sorry but I cannot accept any alliance in public place where others maybe listening. However, I like the idea and I will speak with you again with my decision. I hope in the next few days, you come to trust me on your own terms and not Kimbers.”

"It wasn't meant as an insult. I just need to get to know you. Kimber and Mallory I felt like I knew in an instant. Like old friends meeting for the first time."
She gave him a serious look, "You're just mysterious. It's the type of guy you are. They're like open books and you're like a locked journal. So it's not that I DISTRUST you it's just that," her demeanor softened, "we should hang out you know?"
"Anyway I'll see you at the secret headquarters later tonight!" She said getting up.
"I have to get back to my team," she said smiling as she walked away, "we need each other ya know?"
She stopped and turned around, "Oh and don't pretend like you're going to have to think about it." She flashed one last genuine smile, "I already told you I'd see you back at headquarters. You're one of us now!"

She mentioned that she did not mean anything as an insult, that the others she met and just connected to but he was a different story all together. She compared him to a locked journal, which sort of made him chuckle a bit. Then she mentioned about hanging out. That struck him a little different but then again who was he to really complain about any of it.
He shifted a little and said, “Always willing to hang out with anyone…which reminds me…”
She then hopped up and said that she would see him later at the secret HQ, which kind of surprised him since he had no idea what that meant or where that meant.
She got up and mentioned that she would then head off towards her team and said that they needed each other. Derrin nodded to himself and then simply noted that, yes, they did need each other.
She mentioned that there was no need to pretend to think about, he was already one of them. After that she got up and left.
Derrin’s mouth opened. He stood up and simply walked over and tossed out the rest of his food. “So either she just called me an object, which I doubt was her intention or she really believes that I am one of them.”
He gave a sort of devilish grin, “Man so many people think I am their pockets but in the end, I can really only be in one pocket right? I wonder who believes that I am with them and against them. I also wonder if anyone hates me.”
He shrugged his shoulder. Only time would tell right? With that he began walking towards the common rooms.
