Wallace sat down in the common area right outside the cafeteria at a table for two with a box under his arm. The box was carved out of rosewood and had a high polished sheen, Wallace set it on the table and lifted the single hinged boxes lid open carefully with two hands. Wallace lifted a finely crafted board from the box and set it on an open spot of the table. One by one Wallace removed pieces from the box, carved of different rare stones of black and white.
Chess. Wallace used to play his younger brother and father when he was at home. He always beat Daniel. He never beat his father. It was comforting to have a board in front of him, although it was much different from the shoddy handmade one his father had made for them out of old scrap parts from the hovercraft hangers. But Wallace missed that set, it felt like home.
Reaching into his pocket Wallace grasped his token from home: a metal gear from his time working in the hangers in district 6. Wallace felt the weight of it in his palm before he removed the king from his side of the board and set the gear in the empty square. Wallace smiled to himself before getting down to business.
Wallace started playing both sides of the board. It wasn't the best practice, he would much prefer to be playing another person like his father who posed such a challenge. Wallace wondered if he was watching right now. That made him feel a bit better before he realized that everyone else was watching him too.

Sharlot was one of the people watching Wallace’s intense battle against himself. She carefully observed his strategies of both setting himself up to attack, and then finding all of the available countermoves. He seemed to know what he was doing. Sharlot smiled. She was glad to find someone else who was game-minded like her.
Sharlot sat down across from Wallace and silently waved. She pointed to herself and then to the game board.

Eloise watched as the two sat down to play a game of wits.
This would be interesting...

Wallace was surprised when a girl sat down across from him. He had been so absorbed in playing himself that he hadn't noticed her approach.
She waved at him and then pointed to herself and the game board. Wallace stared at her for a moment, then smiled and nodded. "Sure".
Wallace reset the board and replaced the original king on his side, placing his token back in his pocket. "Let's play". Wallace made the first move of placing his furthest right pawn forward two spaces. He knew nothing of this girl, she was pretty though, and Wallace didn't like that. It was incredibly distracting.

Sharlot and Wallace continued playing the game for some time. Wallace kept looking up at her after each move, which made Sharlot blush. Was he trying to intimidate her by staring her down? Or did she have something on her face? Sharlot tried to stay focused on the game instead of the boy across the table. She had seen Wallace's strategy before and she attempted to counterattack.

Wallace's staring was getting to her. She couldn't concentrate. Was this part of his strategy? If so, it was working. Well two could play at this game. Sharlot tried staring intensely back at Wallace and seductively biting the tip of her finger to see if it would break his concentration.

Wallace kept staring at the older girl with interest. She was silent, and he found that quite compelling. She kept flickering her sight up into his and then back down. Why does she keep doing that? Wallace thought confused. He blushed as he realized he was staring at her far too much for a friendly game such as this. So far he seemed to be doing well against her plays, they were about even at the moment. He looked up again and noticed she was biting the tip of her finger. Wallace's face turned beet red and he turned his face straight down at the chess board.
Oh my god.
He tried to concentrate on purely the game instead of the attractive older tribute.

(OOC Sorry didn't state I was using my Tactics in the above post.)
Wallace barely broke away from his self consciousness to make a play to decide the match, it came down to his final two pieces: a pawn and a rook, and her king.
"Checkmate" Wallace whispered, his face still crimson. He held out a hand to the silent girl. "That was a really fun game, thanks for p-playing with me". Wallace actually felt a lot better than he had earlier. It was good to play against someone besides himself. It reminded him of home.

Sharlot couldn't help but laugh as she shook Wallace's hand. They had both played a terrible game of chess, but when Wallace's face was glowing with embarrassment she knew she had won the real game. But Sharlot liked Wallace. You could learn a lot about someone from the way they played a game. Sharlot grabbed a napkin and wrote a password on it and slid it across the table. 7935 As blushing Wallace reached for it she snatched it back and added a note under the password before sliding it across the table again. "FYI This isn't for my hotel room so don't even try it, perv."She winked at Wallace and stood up to leave. She was starting to feel more confident. Maybe Gwendolyn was rubbing off on her.

Wallace reached for the napkin only to have it snatched back. He gave Sharlot a quizzical look before she handed back the napkin. His face had never been more red in his life.
"J-Jeez." He stammered as she winked at him and stood up to leave. He was silent a moment.
"Thanks... I really appreciate this." Wallace said finally. His voice was steady now, he smiled at her faintly. He looked at her a moment and then his smile faded and the color drained from his face. Wallace looked down at the table and began packing up the game he had taken from his room in silence. He tossed most of the pieces a little too hard, and one broke. swearing under his breath Wallace got up to leave.

Wren had been pacing through the complex when he heard an intense silence, or lack of any sound. Someone was concentrating. It was probably Sharlot. He poked his head in, only to catch Sharlot handing something to Wallace. Wren's mind was racing.
