Julian found himself in the rose gardens and paused. He had never even seen flowers before! And these were so big. He wandered around in the gardens looking for a small place to sit.
Part of him thought that maybe he should be trying to talk to other tributes and see what was going on. Everyone seemed to be pairing up. It would definitely make things more difficult for him in the arena.
He also wondered where Thomas was. He seemed so nice and friendly. Julian wished he could have talked with him some more before the feast ended. Maybe he should try to meet some more people like him. But I guess it just wasn't in his nature. He didn't know how to start conversations with people! What would he say? He thought about this for awhile.

Wren wandered into the rose garden and round Julian sitting alone. Wren knew what that felt like. Although he was that kind of kid back home, he knew he didn't stand a chance in that arena if he didn't branch out and talk to everyone.
"Hey, kid. How's your training going? Are you nervous for your interview?" Wren sat down next to Julian. "Here, I brought some scones from the cafeteria. Want one?"

The friendly boy who had thrown Julian up and around all over the dance floor at the feast joined him and offered him a scone. Julian was happy to see him, he had actually never gotten the opportunity to speak with him. He took the scone and said hello.
"Training seemed to go pretty good. I was looking over the different kinds of plants. None of that kind of stuff grows in 8." He laughed. "Just streets and factories. But as for the interview, it's hard to say. You never know what they'll ask you!" He laughed.
"What about you? How are you finding this period of," Julian's face fell as he tried to find the words, "friendliness?"
"I've never had so many people come up and talk with me being all friendly. Next thing you know you're supposed to never see them again or even fear them. It's so...it just hurts."

Wren considered Julian's question as he nibbled on his scone. "Hm. Well, I think everything shifted the minute my name was called at the Reaping. I may not be a huge fan of the Games, but I'm smart. I know sponsors are watching all the time. And I know that no one can survive for long in the arena without some friends, unless they're super lucky and just hide out the whole time..." Wren had considered this strategy, but knew he would be in trouble if found by a larger group.
"Plus, I don't really have friends back home. So I figured if I'm going to die, I'd rather die with a few friends, even if they're not who I think they are. I'm happy just to interact if these are my last days. The old Wren is sorta fading away, I guess. Things gotta change when you're in the Games."
Wren liked talking to Julian. He was about Egret's age. Wren had never been able to have conversations like this with Robin. They were just too different from each other, despite being brothers. But he felt a connection with Julian.

Wren's optimism made Julian happy. It made him look forward to tomorrow. Something Julian hadn't done since...ever. Julian had always lived for the day. And he hoped that maybe Wren's optimism could be with him all the time. Talking to Wren felt comfortable.
"Could you possibly give me some advice on the interview? I honestly don't even know if I should be honest or not during it." Julian rubbed his arm. "I just wanna be happy, like you."

Wren smiled at Julian. He'd been asked for advice a few times in his life, by Egret. But this was different. Egret didn't look up to him, exactly. It's like they were equals. Julian seemed to admire Wren, which felt nice. Wren wanted to be seen as strong, but not a target. He didn't want to hurt anyone, but knew he'd be tested if anyone came at him-or those he cared about. "Sure. I can give some advice. Personally, I'm a fan of honesty. I think it saves a lot of time from bullshit, you know? I mean, unless you're hoping to completely mislead someone, don't just flat out lie. If you're working a strategic spy angle or want the sponsors to see you as mysterious, I guess you could leave some things a bit vague and open to interpretation." Wren hoped that was helpful. "If you're really worried about sponsor points, I'm sure you'll think of some good lines for them, though. You seem like a clever kid." Wren knew he'd fed a bit of excess charm to the sponsors and Capitol, and he felt bad, but this new Wren had to take flight in order for him to succeed in the Games. Do you need an alliance? We're recruiting...but we have some conditions. What's your opinion on the Primrose Accord from year 2?
