Valeria decided she might as well drop off the little baggage she brought along in her room.
Expecting a modest two bed set up she was quite surprised at the insanely posh suite they had given her.
She plopped down onto the bed unceremoniously. The bed made a satisfying "floomf" noise as she did so.
"Hmm...that kid doesn't seem to be around yet," she said aloud as she scanned the rest of the room she had all to herself.
"I should really get to know him... Allies are so rare in this sort of thing"

"Wow." Julian entered the luxury suite and let his eyes travel to each and every object in the room. He spotted some candies on the table and was starting to pocket them when he heard his district mate talking to herself. He jumped and then looked in her room. Should he go talk to her? He might as well try. He has to share a space with her for awhile. Good to be on friendly terms. He knocked.
"Hi, I'm Julian. What did you think of that feast?"

A sudden knock on the bedroom door of the suite caught her off guard. It was a couple seconds before she realized that the knock had to be coming from the district foyer meaning it was her District mate. Hopefully he hadn't heard her call him "Kid". I mean He WAS a kid being...what...12 and all? But still there were some people who took that kind of word the wrong way. She made her way over to the door and opened it and indeed standing in front of her was her district mate. "Hi, I'm Julian. What did you think of that feast?" She put on her most diplomatic face. Val wasn't THAT tall but she definitely towered over her district mate. "...does he have a candle in his pocket?" she thought to herself. "Hi," she said warmly at last, "My name's Valeria but most people just call me Val." "As for the feast," she grinned, "You HAVE to try the eclairs!"

"Hi Val! It's so good to meet you! I like you're hair, it looks like water!"
Julian then took three eclairs out of his pocket. "I'm saving these for later! These are the most delicious things ever! Want one?" Julian had chocolate on his face, attempted to wipe it off, grinned, and stuck out his hand.

"I'd love one!" she exclaimed and started chowing down on the eclair she was offered.
"Yeah I guess it does look a bit like water," she mumbled in between bites, "so what's your story?"
"You're a bit young to be a tribute."

Julian was enjoying his eclaires until being reminded of the games again. After all, he had been eating the best food of his life, learning how to dance, and talking with surprisingly pleasant people. He took a pause from eating before answering the question. Why ruin this delicious taste with bad thoughts?
"Well, the reaping does go to the age of twelve. So...I guess it can happen." He paused. "But, it's not like I'm leaving anything home either." He paused in thought, "I guess I'll get by or just have to learn how to." He shrugged, cracked a smile, and took another bite from his eclaire.
"How about you? How do you think you ended up here? I mean we were all chosen. I guess I was just another piece of trash the city needed to clean up." He added a small laugh.

"How about you? How do you think you ended up here? I mean we were all chosen. I guess I was just another piece of trash the city needed to clean up." He added a small laugh. Val was taken a bit back when he called himself "trash" but remembering she had pegged him as a "street urchin" when she first saw him she felt a bit ashamed at herself. She chuckled in a way she hoped was encouraging, "Well to be fair in that city everything is trash." She grinned, "You and I are just the ones that escaped the dump and hopefully at least one of us makes it to the recycling plant." She shook her head, "That was a BAD metaphor..." she thought to herself. She looked down at Julian and realized just how young he really was. Valaria wasn't even sure he understood the gravity of the situation he was in. "If I had my choice I wouldn't be here," she said at last, "I just made some bad choices, hurt a friend, and I guess this is what I deserve..." She smiled, "Would you mind sparing another eclair?"

"Not at all." Julian smiled and handed her another eclair.
His thoughts drifted back to District 8. He didn't know that many people from the district, but Valeria definitely the first person who had been so honest with him so fast. It made him feel strangely special and he felt that he should try to say something to cheer her up.
"Well. You know, you could be a good person too and have horrible things happen to you. You know, like..." He paused for a moment. It always felt weird telling a story from his life and try to not sound like he was asking for pity or something. "Like my ma. She was a good person. She just...ended up with a terrible guy and...uh now she's gone." I guess that's one way to put it. He shrugged the stream of bad thoughts away.
"But, you're here now and you've got an eclair in your hand. So why not enjoy that?"

"HEAR, HEAR!" she said in agreement before cramming the pastry into her mouth.
She smiled at the young boy, "Look, I like to think of myself as a good person but in District 8 you need to do what it takes to get by because if you don't you'll end up going into one of the dark alleyways and never coming out again."
"If you're any indication your mother must have been a wonderful person Julian," she added warmly.

Julian smiled.
"But I know what you mean. Those streets can be horrible. That's why you have to live every day for that day. What did you do to get by?" Julian smiled. "I was invisible. Never caught!"
