As Jessie had been socializing with his fellow tributes in addition to the sponsors, he had noticed that many of them were much bigger, stronger, and older than him. While Jessie had been in fights before at school or with any of the henchman that came after his father, Jessie had also developed the ability to tell when he was out matched in a fight as well. As a result, while Jessie was competent in a fight, he became even better at running. Dealing with punks at school was usually not too big a problem. It was with the bigger, larger and more experienced henchman that Jessie quickly learned that he needed to run from, and he became quite good at it too. He was still in fact alive despite their best efforts. Jessie felt competent that he could hold his own in a fight with many of the tributes, but he knew that one day he would need to fight the bigger stronger tributes. Running wouldn't help him win the games against them that's for sure.
Jessie walked into a training room where he saw many of his fellow tributes training as well. He quickly noticed that everyone in the room was carefully watching everyone else. They were looking for weaknesses to exploit later or trying to figure out who the strongest tributes this year would be. Jessie knew that there were a few shortcomings in his fighting style and that's why he was here. He had thought about possibly training in another type of skill in order to avoid others from scouting out how good or bad he was at fighting, but ultimately decided against it because he knew how important it would be to improve his skills in that area. Those fights would at the end of the day decide the victor. Every other skill helped tremendously as well, but in his mind, strong fighting skills were among the most important cornerstones in winning the games.
Jessie found one of the few fighting instructors that were not busy helping someone else and focused on honing his craft. He told his instructor to not hold back because his opponents certainly wouldn't. The instructor was at times able to make him look foolish, but Jessie didn't care because a mistake made here would not be a mistake he would repeat.
