Ayla walked back into the room after the completion of the ceremony. Seth was right behind her, though they had not yet spoken of the night's events.
"That went so well!" she exclaimed. "You were right, you do have strong arms. I'm really glad we pulled that off. Now that that's over with, I feel like we should get to know each other a little better. You've mentioned that you don't know district 5 all that well. Why is that? Were you not raised there? "

Seth hobbled back into the hotel after Ayla and quickly sat down in the nearest armchair. He was ready to pass out, but Ayla's energy kept him attentive.
"Thanks, it was nothing," said Seth wiping his brow. He liked her genuine tone of voice, and her presence was soothing, unlike the crowds at the parade.
Seth made sure their mentor wasn't in the room before answering Ayla's question. He beckoned for her to come sit closer and he spoke quietly.
"No, I've only been in Five for the last year. I was actually born and raised in Two. I was on duty for Millie Cartwright's victory tour around the districts. I was training to be a Peace Keeper. It's kind of a secret, but I'm sure someone from Two has recognized me and word has gotten out by now. I guess we'll see what happens."

Ayla was shocked, a peace keeper? They could be such horrible people.
"District 2 huh?" Ayla wasn't sure how she felt about this. Two was full of career tributes, wealth, and greater allegiance to the Capitol. He couldn't help where he came from though, right? She felt uncomfortable and quickly changed the subject.
"So do you have a plan for the games? Do you want to be a part of an alliance or do toughly solo?"

“I think having an alliance is always the safest way to go. Travel in numbers, but not too great of numbers. Only people you can trust. And you need someone to keep everyone in line and on the same page, like Millie did last year.”
“I think I can keep people in line. I mean, I never really finished my training for obvious reasons.” Seth held up his cane. “But I WAS really good at it.”
Seth wasn’t sure if she was trying to propose an alliance. Maybe she was waiting for him to take the lead, just like for the parade. Seth had a good feeling about Ayla and could see them working well together. During that moment they shared in the parade he felt like they could really trust each other. Plus, she was extremely pretty, which he knew shouldn’t be a factor, but naturally it was.
“It’s kind of early to know for sure, but I think we could make a good team. Anyway it seems like we’re on the right track, yeah?”
“So about this party,” Seth said, his smile fading a bit. “Do you think it’s going to be crowded like the parade was?”

Ayla smiled. She did think they made a nice team. The parade had gone well, hadn't it?
"I think we make a nice team as well. I think we would do well together in the games, especially if we can make a few more friends around here."
She paused, wanting to ask the question that had been on her mind since she saw him walk on stage at the reaping. "Can I ask you something?"
"What happened to your leg?"

“These are why I got stuck in Five,” Seth said patting his knees. “Remember, after Millie gave her victory speech that riot broke out in the streets? Before the hovercrafts arrived there weren’t enough of us Peace Keepers to stop people from tearing down fences and trashing everything in sight. It got out of hand really fast. There was a mob of people running down the street where I was positioned. My dad told me to open fire, but froze up and I didn’t do it. The wave of people bore down on us and we got beat down and trampled. A hundred people stepping on me, breaking and bruising every part of my body, but my legs took the worst of it. They were kicked and stomped so badly they stuck out at weird angles. And after the reinforcements took down the rioters, my squad left me there. The next time I saw them they had replaced me and they told me I couldn’t come back to District Two.”
Seth shrugged and smirked. “My legs seem to work well enough though. I can still get around just fine and catch girls falling out of the sky if I need to.”

Ayla's eyes widened at the story. She laughed at his last line. "Yes, you seem to do just fine for yourself!"
Her mind turned to business. "What do you think of the other tributes? Are there any you hope to align with, or others you want to steer clear of?"
