After reaching Level 3 in the west tower Arnie began to walk through a dark and meandering path, just as he began to make his way he started to hear his father calling out to him. 'Arnie! Boy! Don't forget your tools, you left them over here!' It couldn't be, they wouldn't bring his father here. No, it was a jabberjay. "Ignore it Arnie." he mumbled to himself as he tried to maintain his focus.

Moments later, Arnie emerged from the dark and saw that he had maintained the right path through the obstacle. It would have been nice to get that jabberjay, but for now Arnie was just glad to have made it through.
"This way!" Arnie called, hoping everyone else would find their way.

Ox waited as the jabber jay fluttered above his head screaming in the voice of his mother. He didn't think he would remember her voice so clearly after all this time. He waited until it flew just a little too close and then leaped into the air and snagged the bird with one hand. Ox roared triumphant.

Derrick looked coolly up at the jabberjays. He's had practice in blocking out the taunts they were mimicking. That didn't mean he was immune to them. He decided to take the challenge of trying to catch one.

As Ayla was walking through the corridor, she heard a voice cry out to her. "Ayla! Help me!" She instantly recognized it as her little brother's voice. But it couldn't be.... It had to be one of those fucking birds. Ayla spotted it and decided to try to catch it. She knew the odds were vary slim, she had little knowledge of the species, but it was this or listen to her brother in agony.

"Ayla please. They have me. Come help me!" The creaming continued. She hadn't managed to catch the jay. She tried again.

Derrick breathed a sigh of relief as a jabberjay got caught in the trap he made. He wasn't quite certain it would work since he had to make it using mostly branches. He grinned. Maybe his luck wasn't so bad.

Just as she thought she had the jay, it flitted away. "Fuck!" she yelled. Was it really the bird, or her brother? She was starting to become severely confused.

"Ayla, quick! They've got me." He was screaming now. It couldn't be a bird, it had to be him. She couldn't... what was happening? She fell to the ground in misery, she was starting to lose it.

"Ayla!!!!" Ox yelled back into the thicket of birds. Still gripping his jabber jay in his hulking fist he ran back to grab her from the swarm of terrifying screams.
"Someone help me get her out!" Ox said batting even more of them away from her. None of them had any effect on him, they did not scream for him. They screamed for her.

Arnie saw Ayla starting to lose grip on reality and ran over to grab her shoulders and pull her out. Ox was furiously batting away a throng of birds so thick that Arnie could barely make out the large mans frame.
"We've got you Ayla! Ox and I are here, focus on us." With the path he had just traveled clear in his head Arnie lead Ayla and Ox back towards safety.

Ayla saw an ox running toward her. Or no... it wasn't really an ox... it was Ox. Her fellow tribute and friend. And then another shape was approaching. Who was that? Arnie? She was losing her grip on reality. They were guiding her to safety.
It was Ox and Arnie. As they helped her away from the jays, she started to come to. "It was just the birds" she said under her breath. "Just birds." She was getting a grip on reality, but she was mentally exhausted.

Through the darkness Seth could hear Ayla screaming. Had the birds gotten to her? Or was it just another Jabberjay? He desperately wanted to help her, but he would have to get through this maze first.
“Someone help me get her out!” he heard Ox’s voice yell. Were they imitating Ox, too? He had to go help her.
“No Seth! Don’t follow the voices!” he heard Derrick calling from the other side of the chamber. “I’ve found the safe path here!”
Seth heard a flutter of wings and attempted to snag the bird. Time to find out which voice is the real one!

Seth narrowly missed the bird. He still had no idea which voice was real. They probably think I’ll go rescue Ayla so it must be fake, he thought and headed toward where he heard Derrick’s voice.
“Derrick! Where are you?” Seth called out.
“I’m right here!” Derrick’s voice replied. “Just a little further and you’ll be safe.”
Should I trust him? Another flutter of wings. Seth reached for the bird.

Rosa saw a small shape flit by her head and several of her fellow tributes running around trying to get a hand on whatever they were. She wasn't entirely sure what they were trying to catch but if they wanted it she might as well help.
As a small shape shot by her head she reached out a hand quickly to grab a hold of whatever it was...

Seth grabbed the bird.
“Seth! I’m here!” the bird chirped in Derrick’s voice.
Almost fell for it… But that must mean Ayla really is in trouble! Seth found his way through the maze and met up with Ayla and the others. She was curled up and frantic.
“It’s all right, Ayla! We’re all here! We made it.”

She looked into her hand to see what was squirming inside. It seemed to be a jabberjay. She smiled to herself, "This could be useful..."
"Hey guys," she sad about to show off her trophy when she saw Ayla panting on the ground being tended to by some fellow tributes. Now she felt bad. She had rushed in thinking of herself and not at all what could be happening to her fellow tributes. She slunk over to where they were resting. "Are you ok?" she ventured, "Is there...anything I can do?"

Alicia was lost in the dark maze. She wished the others hadn’t taken off like that. The silence was only broken by echoing screams from her teammates.
“Whatever’s in here must have got someone…”
She put her fists up, ready to defend herself against whatever monster lurked in these halls. Then she heard her— a soft wimper of a small child.
“Rowan? Oh god, they put Rowan in here!”
Alicia took off running, calling out “Rowan! Where are you! Mommy’s here!”
How was this possible? Could the Capitol really have brought her here?

Alicia suddenly stopped in her tracks. She listened more closely. That’s wasn’t Rowan’s cry. When Rowan was upset she wouldn’t quietly whimper like that. She would let the world know it and scream until her mommy came. Rowan wasn’t here. She knew exactly what the Game Makers were playing at. This was cruel. They were using her own child’s voice against her.
No longer frightened, Alicia ran through the rest of the maze.
“Jabberjays! Those bastards are using Jabberjays to trick us!”
