Donald Freeman: Well this sure has been an exciting Hunger Games! This year’s arena featured rapidly changing seasons and various hazardous terrains. Can you break these down for us, Tuck?
Tuck Johnson: Sure thing, Donald. Each of the four terrains is a hazardous place to be during one of the four seasons. The arena starts with the winter season. On winter days, all plant life disappears, the river dividing the playing field in half freezes over, and the tributes wandering in the mountains will be forced to flee or get covered by a snowy avalanche. The following day is a lovely spring day where medicinal herbs sprout, the river thaws, and the forest fills with tracker jacker nests on every tree. In summer, tributes can search for edible herbs, but the river dries up from the intense heat and if tributes are caught in an open field with no shade they will suffer from heat exhaustion. Finally, in autumn the plants are replaced with poisonous herbs, the empty river is replenished with a flooded plain, and the bears in the hills awaken from their slumber and attack anyone on sight.
Donald: Well let’s start our recap from the beginning, Tuck. Did you expect the cornucopia to be such a blood bath?
Tuck: No way! In the training days we saw most people focusing on survival skills but then right out of the gates we had 21 tributes running into the cornucopia and fighting to the death!
Donald: With 8 dead in the first few minutes, the tributes spread out as far as possible from the cornucopia to heal up.
Tuck: Except for Rosalind, Agni, Leevy, and Caramon who stayed at the cornucopia for a day before ending their alliance and going separate ways. This was a big surprise considering their unbelievable success at the start of the Games.
Donald: Meanwhile the other alliances strengthened. Sebastian, Kimberly, Claire, and Hollis spent time by the river and the woods healing, sharing items, teaching each other skills, and just bonding with each other. In the north Melody and Otto team up with Ender and establish the castle ruins as their stronghold.
Tuck: On the second day the tributes realize the arena is rapidly changing seasons. The weather shifts to a warm spring day and the tributes come out of hiding to fight. Kiri runs into Helena along the river to the west, but Helena takes her out with a single deadly crossbow bolt to the neck. Then we have Karl changing course for the mountains where he can’t seem to escape trouble. First he runs from Tesla, who looks like she has no intention of fighting but Karl flees to the West. Unfortunately he runs into Rosalind, who doesn’t hesitate to put an axe in his back. He manages to escape back to the cornucopia where Caramon gives him a taste of spear but this guy just won’t go down! He runs further south and encounters the last part of the broken alliance. He just barely escapes from Agni and Leevy and he thinks he’s safe. He’s even tricked into believing he’s had some good fortune from all this – a sleeping, unsuspecting Wendy Winkelman! He moves in for the kill when he’s caught in her net trap!
Donald: It’s the dawn of the third day and Karl makes himself bleed to death before Wendy can decide what to do with him. And the tributes look exhausted as the blistering heat pains those in regions with no shade and dries up all water sources.
Tuck: Caramon decides to camp alongside the river and wait for the water to return. And I guess he should have been careful about what he wished for because dawn of day four and bam! Caramon is wiped out as a deluge of water floods the region.
Donald: Rosalind quickly regrets leaving the group when she runs into one of the bear mutts – the other autumn hazard. The bear tears her leg off and leaves her to bleed out.
Tuck: Then at dusk, Tesla wanders into the woods. She encounters Claire Ward and flees at the sight of her, only to fall into one of her teammate Hollis’ traps. She quickly escapes and thinks she’s home free, but oh no! There’s another trap. She tumbles into the pitfall and Claire finishes her off.
Donald: On day 5, Wendy Winkelman and Helena Woods narrowly escape death. Wendy is able to flee from the snowy mountain avalanche, but Helena gets buried beneath the snow for a day before she can manage to escape, barely avoiding freezing to death.
Tuck: After a slow day, Sebastian, Kimberly, Hollis, and Claire head out of the forest, but aren’t quite quick enough to get out before the springtime swarm of tracker jackers gets to them. They all escape to the river except for Hollis who is left swollen and lifeless at the edge of the woods.
Donald: Day 7 finishes with the highest death count since the cornucopia! Wendy, who had barely escaped two of the other seasonal hazards, ends up collapsing from heat exhaustion in the open field with no shade. Later that day, Ender and his District 1 allies find Helena’s trail in the hills. They track her all the way back to the castle ruins where they find she’s already been taken out by Leevy and Agni! Leevy sits high on the stone battlements and takes out Melody with an arrow straight to the eyeball while Agni single-handedly dispatches both Otto and Ender on the ground.
Tuck: It’s autumn now and the two remaining alliances throw themselves in harms way! Leevy and Agni abandon the shelter of the castle ruins to brave the bear-infested hills. Together they manage to take down a charging bear, but not before it leaves a big gash on Leevy’s arm. In the forest Kimberly creates trouble for her group, setting the woods ablaze with her expert fire-building skills. This might have been a good strategy, except that in the fall season the river that borders the forest floods and the current makes it too dangerous to cross!
Donald: I honestly don’t know what she was thinking. Maybe she thought the other alliance was in the woods and they’d have a chance to escape, but didn’t consider the river hazard that forced them to decide between burning to death or risking drowning.
Tuck: Or maybe she saw it as a way to get rid of Claire Ward, who gets swept away by the current. She doesn’t technically drown though; she manages to survive the river, but she can’t escape the current before the river passes through the force field at the end of the arena and the shock kills her.
Donald: But the string of bad luck continues! Though the two tributes from District 4 unsurprisingly have survived the water hazard, they have now crossed into bear territory! Despite the unfortunate events, these two are resilient. They manage to kill the bear with just one punch from each of them! Incredible!
Tuck: So now it’s District 4 against District 11. District 11 has a major equipment and health advantage going into the final day. The Game Makers don’t even need to push these two groups together as they happen to meet up at dusk in the frozen hills just north of the Cornucopia.
Donald: Sebastian travels ahead of Kimberly to scout out the area. Agni and Leevy watch Sebastian approaching from their hiding spot. When he’s turned to face the other direction, Leevy pulls back an arrow and hits Sebastian in the kidney. Sebastian turns to run but Leevy lands a second arrow in his neck and he drops to the ground.
Tuck: But when Agni and Leevy go to investigate the body, Kimberly silently creeps up from behind, but she loses her footing on the hill, tumbles to the ground, and draws the enemies attention! Leevy fires an arrow that just barely grazes Kimberly’s shoulder. Kimberly gets on her feet and lunges at Leevy, grabbing her by the arm and dislocating it, forcing her to drop the bow. Agni jumps into battle, swinging his axe, but Kimberly ducks and evades a sharp jab from Leevy’s knife, countering with a kick to Leevy’s gut. Kimberly rolls to dodge two more attacks, gains position behind Leevy and snaps her neck to finish her off.
Donald: Kimberly now turns to face Agni one on one. They pause for a moment to size each other up. Kimberly is unarmed and Agni holds an axe, shield, and body armor. At once they engage. Kimberly blocks the first attack, then strikes with a well aimed kick to Agni’s face. As she pulls back she grasps Agni’s shield, pulling it from his grip. She arms herself with the shield and moves for another attack, but it glances off Agni’s armor. Agni makes a poorly timed diving attack at Kimberly, leaving him prone on the floor and dropping his axe. Kimberly tries to take advantage of the opportunity, but Agni rolls to safety and flips back up to his feet, penetrates Kimberly’s defenses, and scores a powerful hit to her stomach causing her to crumple to the ground. Agni stands over the girl from District 4 who is coughing up blood and he finishes her off by breaking her neck. Three cannons sound and a hovercraft comes to take Agni back to the Capitol and crown him the victor!
Tuck: So congratulations to Agni Sparks from District 1! With a combination of a great teammate, great sponsor support, and a lot of brute force this farm boy gets to come home as a Hunger Games champion!
Donald: We hope you have enjoyed this broadcast of the Hunger Games. This is Donald Freeman and Tuck Johnson signing out. So long, everybody and Happy Hunger Games!
