Clem heard whatever it was approaching Carac’s side of the room. If I stay crouched right here, maybe it won’t find me, she thought.
When Carac shouted it responded with another loud screech, and there was a loud thud as something hit the ground
I can’t stay here. I have to do something. Clem stood up, microscope in hand, and quickly moved through the pitch blackness towards the sound. She only made it a few feet before bumping into the desk, causing the laptop to wake up, illuminating Clem in a bright spotlight of white light.
The thing shuffled around. Clem knew it had turned to face her. This was it, she thought. She waited quietly as the scratching sound approached her. Then as she heard it get close, within striking distance, she held her breath and was petrified stiff. She felt its hot breath and then... it passed right by her. Did it… lose track of me?
Nilla pulled back the string of her bow, making a short creaking sound, and the thing spun around again. Clem had a sudden realization. In the light of the laptop screen she saw the white dial and turned it. A machine hummed to life. The thing screeched. Clem turned the white dial as far as it would go and the machine churned faster, its gears clanking and grinding at an ear piercing volume. The thing now let out a painful screech.
“Guys! Run!” Clem shouted, waving her arms and pointing towards the way they came in. Clem bolted towards the door.
In a rage, the thing knocked over the machine, and the awful sound stopped. It raced toward Clem’s footsteps, cutting off her path before she could reach the doorway. Clem first felt its hot breath, then its teeth, and then it was over.
The room went quiet. The lights flickered back on and there was no sign of Clem or the thing.
“I think it’s on the ceiling. Stay Low!”
