It wasn't going to end like this, it just wasn't, Syd thought as she fought against the cuffs holding her in place. She looked down the row at the others. Val, Cal, Wren, Holly, Thomas, Gwen...they had been through so much in the past week. Tears welled up as she struggled. She had made a promise to all of them that she was going to help bring the peace any way she was able to.
Twisting and writhing around, Sydney was trying her absolute best to be able to escape the cuffs that stood above her head. If only she had a bobby pin or pape clip or something just to make this whole process easier. The metal clanged against her thumb which seemed to be the only reason that the handcuffs wouldn’t fit over……thumb…that’s it. She moved her hands closer together before gathering her fingers to push down on her left hand with the metal of the cuffs. Then, she pushed. Hard. The pain shot through her like a thousand knives but she was able to push her thumb, dislocating the joint enough to slide her wrist out. One hand was free. Good enough. Using both hands, she pulled on the chain to loosen but without the use of her left thumb, it was a struggle. And she didn’t feel like breaking her other thumb, it would make both hands essentially useless. Finding a weak link in the chain, some pressure on it made the small gap in the link bigger and bigger until she slid out of it.
Without the essential use of her left hand, she wouldn’t be much help in scavenging for items. Vester stood on the other side of the platform and she locked eyes with him for just a moment. She waved for the others to get moving towards the hovercraft before going straight for Vester. “No one else should die by the Capitol’s hands…after today. Go! Get out of here!”
She made her decision. Combat training had its advantages, one hand would help as much as she could reasonably expect it to as her left hand was essentially a useless slab of meat. The handcuff was still attached to her right hand, so she decided that the metal would cause a little more damage than just her fist. Taking a running start, she went in for the attack, knowing it’d be her last.
