It was getting really hard to continue pretending to wear the handcuffs that were jangling loosely around her wrists. "Just a little bit longer..." Val thought to herself as she made her way in front of the firing squad with the rest of the tributes.
She glanced over at Gwen who seemed to be fumbling her hands in the general proximity of a peacekeeper's crotch. At this point in her relationship she was in tune enough with her girlfriend to know what was up and sadly it seemed so did the peacekeeper.
Val watched on from her post as Gwen fumbled with unlocking her handcuffs. "She sure didn't have issues with them two nights ago..." she thought to herself.
Suddenly with a resounding thud a box fell from the sky and the peacekeepers around her were gunned down. Turning her gaze skyward she was confronted with a giant hovercraft that seemed to be piloted by a...red headed midget?
Before Val even had time to make sense of the situation it all devolved into chaos. The tributes around her lept forward from their respective points of captivity and anti aircraft guns filled the air with resounding sounds of mechanical thunder. "A rescue?" She asked herself quietly in the midst of it all, "is there really luck left to spare..."
From the corner of her eye she saw Gwen slip off towards the anti aircraft guns and grinned. The circumstances of their relationship had been bleak for so long but maybe that purple picket fence was just over the horizon.
The grin lasted for all of five seconds before she noticed that the peacekeeper she had stolen keys from wasn't as slow as he has seemed. He must have been one step ahead of her this whole time after figuring out her clever...yet sexy...ruse. Gwen tried to duck in and out of the crowd stealthily but it wasn't enough and the peacekeeper followed her every step of the way.
Val followed in a haze as time seemed to slow to a crawl.
Gwen made her way out of the throng of moving bodies and into an opening on the landing strip and the peacekeeper was only...
three steps behind
The loading docks seemed so long ago now...
two steps
And the hotel rooms...had that really only been a week ago...
one step
What had been the point of all this?
The Peacekeeper readied his rifle and Gwen kept moving forward not even noticing her impending death as she rushed headlong at Vester.
Val could see the sick twisted grin on Vester's face. He saw Gwen, He saw the peacekeeper, and he knew he was still pulling the strings even now.
Val's heart ached and her vision grew blurry as she saw the rifle fire.
The pain of the bullet digging its way into her skin was intense. She had been shot before but it had always been a leg or a shoulder. Nothing could prepare you for the agony caused by a rifle bullet tearing about the sinews and muscles of the chest as they tried desperately to protect the organs inside.

As she fell to the ground she clutched at the leg of the peacekeeper holding a smoking rifle. "Damnit you don't get to take this from me!" Val yelled as she did everything she could to prevent him from chasing the woman she loved. "...you don't get to take this from me," she repeated quieter as the ground beneath them grew slick from a mixture of tears and blood.
She saw Gwen make it to the hovercraft.
She saw her turn to look back.
Did she see her?
She hoped she couldn't.
She wanted to be remembered for her moves on the dance floor not her...spasms on this dusty ground.
There would be no picket fence for her but as she saw the hovercraft take flight and make its way toward the horizon she could have sworn she saw the most beautiful shade of purple in the sunset.
"That's the one..." She got out weakly as the world went cold.
A grin crept across her face for the last time because she knew that somewhere...somewhen...a fence was going to be built...
...and someone was going to live a long life making sure it stayed the color of that...particular...sunset...d10+2

"Hahaha! That was wonderful, Val!" Gwen gave Val a peck on the lips, "I haven't had anyone lead me that well in a long time! Thank you for that!"

And the hotel rooms...had that really only been a week ago...
"That was the most roundabout way to ask a person out, you know that? I don't mind if you're a Peacekeeper. I'm not one, just so you know. We are all in the arena under the same terms. I trust you would have told me differently if you knew anything. I still trust you. I still want you by my side in the arena. And yes. I will go on a date with you if we end up surviving this."

What had been the point of all this?
"You mean, are we exclusive? Like girlfriends? Is that what going out to pick a shade of white for our fence means? Because hell you can pick the color and I'll paint it."
The Peacekeeper readied his rifle and Gwen kept moving forward not even noticing her impending death as she rushed headlong at Vester.

I love you too...
