Ayla had something on her mind. Something she didn't want to say... but something she felt she needed to say.
Both she and Seth were struggling in the quicksand. She was being sucked down, but she could handle it. Until now, she had had full health, but Seth looked as though he was really on the brink. "Seth. I hate seeing you like this. Barely able to walk, and giving up hope. I want you to keep on living, but you're scaring me. Seth, I'm going to ask you something that I didn't want to have to ask." She was sweating at the thought of asking her question, and what it really meant. "Seth... would you being willing to give me your blowdart? I don't have a weapon and I'm afraid to face Jaffe and Ingrid without one. If you make it to tomorrow, I swear I'll give it right back to you. I just...." she was struggling in the sand, watching him struggle as well. "I need help from you. I want to stay positive, but you're scaring me."
She felt a horrible sense of dread come over her. She was admitting to herself and Seth that she didn't think he would make it. She had already faced his death once, was that not enough?

Just as she had asked Seth, Ox presented her with Arnie's Sickle. "Oh. Nevermind, Seth. I'm so sorry I had to ask that in the first place."

Seth could tell Ayla was quickly giving up on him. He couldn’t help feeling hurt, but with so few tributes left the Games had to be coming to a close soon. It wasn’t just him — everyone was dying, and everyone was giving up hope.
“It’s okay. We’re all doing everything we can to stay alive and better our chances. But we can’t lose hope in each other. If you want to better your chances we have to keep each other alive. If it comes down to the four of us in the end we can decide what to do then, but for now there are still four enemies out there so we need to stay strong to make sure that one of us can come out on top!”

"I'm sorry Seth. I'm not giving up on you, but you fell out of the hovercraft for God's sake! You must understand how that looks. Now that you made it through the quicksand and got some food from Ox, things are looking up for you! I really am sorry. I can be a bit of a pessimist."
"Was it just you and Kiki on the East Tower, or were there others too?"

“Jaffe and Alistair were there too. Alistair was weak and didn’t seem hostile. Jaffe wanted to shoot me but I talked her out of it. The two seem to be in an alliance together. That makes it extra important that we stand by each other since there’s still another team out there.”
"I bet I'm the only tribute who's been to all four towers," Seth added with a laugh. "I figured I'd do some sight-seeing as long as I'm here. Did you know the Game Makers have created fire-breathing dragon muttations??"

"Wow! You must be very diplomatic. I'm not surprised, you're quite the charmer. I'm glad that worked! That gun is not something I want to have to face... and we know she trained in combat during the training days and improved her skills. I think you might be the only one! Those dragons must have been something! I saw a cyclops, shot him in the eye on the first time! I think that's why Olive decided to like me, she saw that I could be useful!"

Seth was amazed that the Game Makers had created so many different monsters, and even more amazed that Ayla was able to take one down so easily. Seth had struggled against so many obstacles.
“I’m glad you were safe. It sounds like you’ve had no problem staying alive. Since that stampede I’ve been constantly afraid that something could kill me at any moment.”
“Do you ever think about the Training Days anymore?” Seth said, changing the subject. “It seems so long ago, doesn’t it? I wish we could’ve spent more time hanging out and meeting everyone there. Not that it would’ve made things easier now, but I guess I just never had that sort of social experience growing up. I had never been to a party or even had any friends my age. My whole life has been devoted to battle training. Do you think it’s possible to go back and become a normal kid?”

"I had a long winning streak there for awhile. Anytime I did get a lit hurt, I would use sponsor points for morphling. Sadly, I think today marked the end to that streak. That quicksand really kicked my ass. I guess now I'm just as vulnerable and could die at the next event from the gamemaker."
"I think about them sometimes...." She looked off in the distance. "It does seem like a century ago. We didn't do half badly, did we? We managed to put together a large alliance. Though there are only three of us left...." She looked down. The deaths of Derrick and Arnie had been particularly hard on her as they reminded her of some of her friends back home. "But hey, three of us in the final eight isn't bad. And you and I are one of only two districts to have both partners alive. That should make them proud back home." She grabbed his hand. "I'm sorry about earlier, I really am. I was being an idiot. You just really scared be when you fell out of that hovercraft. And before that. Did you know I thought you were dead? Seriously. Don't scare me like that again! I need you."

"For a while I kept thinking that you had just left me there, but I tried to convince myself that you must have mistook me for dead. That's what happened after the riot, too. Everyone thought I was dead and they left me in District 5. That's why I don't think anyone will be proud of me. Nobody knows me there. But I would love to see the faces of the peacekeepers in District 2. All the people who never believed I could become a captain. Well here I am at the top of the pack. We've got to win this thing, Ayla."
