Ayla stepped onto the roof, one foot at a time, followed by Derrick. The air was cool and blew her red hair out of her face.
"So," she said with a pause, "what's your story?"

Derrick could feel himself relax as they stepped onto the roof. He didn't realize that he was quite that tense. He walked over to the edge and looked out at the city. He smiled. It reminded him of home in a way. He always climbed the trees before they had to cut them down. The view was always breathtaking.
"I don't really have much of a story. We're lucky in District 7. We don't have much hardship since people always seem to need wood in one way or another. Of course, the capitol cracks down on us if we don't meet our quota. In a way, it makes me feel kind of guilty when I overhear everyone else talking about their life." Derrick paused. His problems seemed so petty compared to everyone else's.
"What about you?"

Seth made his way up to the top of the Training Center for the first time. He had heard that after the elevator there were a few stairs before you could get to the door on the top level. Seth normally avoided stairs whenever possible, but he was hoping to spend some more time with Ayla before the end of the Training Days. Seth stepped out onto the roof and saw Ayla and Derrick having a conversation. He hobbled over to join them.
"Hey... guys!" said Seth, leaning heavily on his cane and somewhat out of breath. "Good to see you..." He was going to say more but his knees started to feel weak. "Sorry, I'm gonna sit down for a sec." Seth plopped down on the ground and leaned back against the barrier.

"I think I'll join you," Derrick said as he laid down on the ground looking at the stars. "The view here isn't nearly as good as the one back home."

"You seem to have a strong connection to your home," Seth said, finally catching his breath. "I wish I could still feel that, but I haven't seen my home in so long. As I kid I used to climb up the mountain trail to the quarry at night to look at the stars. Obviously my legs worked back then. Now I can hardly get up half a flight of stairs without nearly passing out."

"What happened to them?" The words were out of his mouth before he even thought about them. "Er, I mean, uh," he waved his hands around frantically. "You probably get asked that all the time so, um, I understand if you don't want to answer that. Heh." Derrick put the palm of his hand up to his forehead in defeat. "I'm an idiot."

"No, it's fine," Seth reassured him. "There was a riot in District 5 following the games last year. I was in the squad trying to stop it, but it got out control and I was trampled. There were people everywhere and I got kicked and stomped so bad it shattered most of my body, but my legs took the worst of it. It took a whole 8 months before I could walk on my own again."
"But I won't let it hold me back!" Seth said brightly. "Unless the arena is one giant winding staircase!"

Ayla had stayed quiet for awhile, just thinking and admiring the city lights. She put her hand on Seth's back for reassurance.
"It's strange being up her together, it's almost like being friends...."

Seth was glad to have Ayla as a district partner. It had only been a short time they had spent together in the Capitol, but he felt that they were starting to become close.
“Yeah,” Seth agreed. “It’s actually nice to be surrounded by people my age for once. The only person I’ve talked to over the last year is a sixty year old woman.”
Seth realized there wasn’t a lot of time left before they would all be thrown in the arena. If he was going to make more friends he would have to act quickly.
“Hey Derrick, do you have a group yet? Ayla and I have been talking about building an alliance for the games. We’ve both really liked your training performances and you seem like a good guy. I know we don’t know each other well yet, but would you like to try teaming up? We've got most of the skills covered but we could use a strong athletic person to round us out. Also, we were also planning on talking to Ox soon and you guys seem like you work well together. What do you think?”

Derrick took in what Seth said.
"Yea, of course! I already talked with Ox about hanging out in the arena. He seems pretty set about having his district partner along. I haven't met her yet. I wonder what she's like."
Derrick caught was Alya said and thought about it. "Well, why can't we be friends? There's no rule dictating that we can't be."

"Cool! Glad to have you on board. I'll talk to Ox and his district partner Alicia and see what they think. I haven't met her either, but if we want Ox we should try to get to know her too."
The excitement of building their team gave Seth a second wind. "Come on! Let's go knock on their door!"

Ayla was excited, things were coming together! They were forming a solid team.
"Awesome! She said. Let's go talk to them."
