Alicia made it to the skill session a bit late, but she was proud of herself for showing up at all. After her talk with Ox she realized she had to make more of an effort at these games. It wasn't just her own life at stake. She made her way over to the climbing wall. Declining help from the instructor, she strapped herself onto one of the ropes and she began to climb. At first she relied too much on upper body strength and found she couldn't pull herself up onto the first ledge.
"Do you need some help?" the instructor called up to her.
"I can figure it out on my own!" she yelled back.
Through sheer determination she eventually she got the hang of finding the right footholds and using her legs to help her scale the obstacles. Now on top of the ledge she looked up at the rock wall before her. The wall was smooth and didn't seem to have any clear footholds. She turned and looked over the edge down at the instructor.
"Okay, now I could use some help."
"See that ledge to your right?"
Alicia looked. It was about 10 feet away and only about a foot and a half wide.
"Yeah? What about it? I'm not supposed to jump to that, am I?"
"It's all you girl!"
Even though she was attached by the rope, the size of the gap and the height she was at caused her stomach to drop. Alicia mustered up her courage. She had to do it for Rowan. She one running step and leaped for the ledge. She flew across the gap and landed on the other side, whacking her knee on the edge. It wasn't a perfect jump, but she made it.
