"I can't miss now." Her whisper seemed to stretch the air tight with tension as the young tribute steadied her crossbow. Her finger closed upon its trigger...
"Not so fast!" The scream cut through the onlookers' silence. They watched the dark-haired target throw a small trinket to the ground. Smoke instantly filled the holo-table's projection just before it froze in place.
"Y'all know what happened 'fter that." Agni paused as the theater lights rose. "Ayla stole Jaffe's weapon, fired at 'er; and dashed onto the hovercraft like a horde o' trackerjackers were on her tail to win the Games."
Some of the dozen viewers seated in the spacious theater room nodded their heads as Agni continued. "Ayla didn't win nearly as hard as Jaffe lost. That bolt would'a gone straight through Ayla; if Jaffe had pulled the trigger. All the plannin', strugglin' and sacrificin' she and her friends made to get 'er there; and she didn't even take the shot."
Agni stepped away from the theater console to lift his drink from a table. "Most dangerous thing in the arena ain't tributes, pods or hunger: It's hesitation."
The District 11 victor smiles as you enter the room. "Here's someone'll who'll be on that table next year; no doubt!" He gestures toward the theater control panel; filled with scenes from the previous Hunger Games and training days.
"I'm sure y've seen the recent games. Any lessons from 'em you'll be bringing to the arena this year?"

Loise had been wandering around the party after eating her fill. She had seen a group of girls drinking at the bar, and should probably socialize, and maybe build some allies, but alcohol seemed like a poor choice as her life depended on her wits. She had stumbled upon the projection screen and realized she was watching a previous game.
After Agni Sparks shifted everyone's gaze towards her she realized paying more attention to the previous games would have, at this point, been beneficial. All she could remember from last year was a smaller child getting high and then trying to attack two older tributes he had an allegiance with. Taking an arrow to the chest and arm was not something Loise planned on doing, or have a high child thrashing around when she's trying to stay alive for that matter.
"If I'm going to have allies, I need to choose them wisely."

Ayla was watching a replay of her most pivotal moment in the games from the back row of the theater when she over heard Agni Sparks "Ayla didn't win nearly as hard as Jaffe lost. That bolt would'a gone straight through Ayla; if Jaffe had pulled the trigger. All the plannin', strugglin' and sacrificin' she and her friends made to get 'er there; and she didn't even take the shot."
She walked forward a few rows and sat down next to Agni.
"Interesting theory, Agni. I'd say I won pretty damn hard." She winked. "You can't discredit me because Jaffe choked during the moment that mattered most."
She turned her attention a tribute girl who she believed was from district eight.
"Picking your allies is key. I wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for Seth." She looked at the ground sadly, remembering the bright eyed boy who had sacrificed himself to allow her to go on. "Your allies are your greatest resource in this game. Look at me - I beat out the girl with the best weapon in the game - and I credit that to the support my friends afforded me"

This seemed deep. Too deep for her, these were the legends she was looking at. In District 5, she had never interacted with any of the previous winners, but these people had been broadcasted on absolutely every screen in every district in Panem. Trying to look confident, she walked up to Agni and Ayla.
"I think you both have a point, allies are important..." she made a show of nodding towards both of them, as though they were already friends..." but there's no room to hesitate. It is life or death out there. Every choice you two made was made in the heat of the moemnt, and I think it was pretty wise... or you wouldn't be here... right?"

Since the theater was adjacent to the ballroom, Wren spotted a girl that looked about his age out of the corner of his eye. She looked as desperate for friends as he felt.
"Hey, you're the Sugarglider girl, right? We're chatting here in the ballroom if you'd like to join!," he yelled towards her. He didn't care who overheard anyway, as there seemed to be only about half the tributes present tonight anyway.

Eloise seemed more confident than Minerva to Agni, but he tried to keep from intimidating them too much. Three years of the Capitol repeating the footage of his gruesome debut in his Games' cornucopia had made people either awed or afraid of him. Only his fellow victor Ayla seemed nonchalant about his presence.
"You've got the right idea, Minerva. Hope t' see you making good choices 'bout what gear you take; and the friends you'll make. I'll be watchin' you!"
The imposing man smiled at her and turned toward the people pretending to mingle as they watched the exchange. He knew his next sentence would make waves across Panem.
"Both o'you've a fightin' chance out there. Getcherselves a good group an' remember;" He winked at Ayla. "Don't hesitate."

Millie made her way into the theater room.
Saw what was playing on the screen.
And promptly walked out.
"...who would want to remember that..."
