After Val and Gwen had returned from their private dance party Holly welcomed them back.
"Syd, I can't greet you at the door or bring flowers... and there's no chocolate if there's no food but you look lovely tonight, my dear. Clearly, we're off to a great start." Holly bowed low and deep chuckling a bit and extended a hand and motioning with the other to a table nearby. Four chairs had been arranged around it and a flashlight was shining up to the ceiling from the center.
"Shall we?"

"There's unfortunately a lack of atmosphere here that I just...oh good, what a wonderful romantic setup," Sydney laughed as she saw the flashlight on the table. "That's honestly so clever, I wouldn't have even done that," she took Holly's hand and followed her to the table. "This is...you're very smart. And it's like the practical smart, you know?"

Gwen wandered in, grinning at the flashlight on the table. "I love what you did with the place." She went to sit at the table, tossing a pair of keys on a nearby couch, before sitting at the table. "You two make a wonderful pair tonight," she smiled at the two.

Val plopped down heavily in the chair next to Gwen, "Yeah they make such a cute couple don't they?"
"So what's on the menu?" she laughed rubbing her wrists under the table.

Holly laughed at Syd's compliment. "Thanks, I tried... not much to work with here." She sat down and looked to the doorway seeing Gwen and Val enter slightly more disheveled than one would expect from mere dancing.
"Not much, I'm afraid, Val." She smiled at the two, looking at each of them. Jokingly she added, "It seems you two already ate." Holly grinned. "Sorry, bad joke. But, I have one more surprise for all of us to make up for it."
She twisted the top of the flashlight to loosen the batteries contacts, allowing the bulb to flicker slightly, then skipped over to the command console nearby. She tapped a few buttons, working intently for a few moments before turning back to face the others watching her from the table. She grinned and with a dramatic motion flicked one last switch killing the lights. After a moment emergency lights flickered on one by one around the room, lighting them all in a softer amber glow.
"That lighting was doing nothing for us, ladies."

Gwen laughed in delight, "My, Holly, you are full of surprises. To be honest, I didn't really peg you as a romantic type. Must have been the Career thing." She looked at Holly, suddenly curious, "Did you have a certain someone back at District 2?"

"You aren't that far off, I never considered romance being a part of my life and didn't really get much experience in that area. There's no one back home lighting a candle for me. A lot of Careers are the 'train hard, party hard' type. I had a somewhat different experience. I never really fit in with them because I joined the program so much later. I had a lot more work to do to catch up and didn't socialize much. I probably missed out on a lot. But I was only doing it because..." Holly voice wavered and dropped lower. "Well, for my family. They didn't see eye to eye with the Capitol and suffered for it, I decided when I was younger to win in the games to give them a better life if I could. I figured it was their best shot. But I expect most of our families have been executed or detained because of this war. Rebellions come at a cost."
Holly shook her head, blinking her watery eyes and smiled.
"Sorry. I figure tomorrow may be what decides all of this and if nothing else you and Valeria should get to have one proper evening together. From what I can tell, love is hard to come by and harder to keep in this world."

Gwen frowned and reached her hand out to touch Holly's, "I'm sorry to hear that about your family. I do hope yours are still alive. If they are anything like you, I'm sure they gave the peacekeepers hell. My family died in a mine-shaft collapse when I was young, so I don't really have too much to worry about there. I guess I don't really have anyone lighting a candle for me either." Gwen felt the mood had shifted.
"What matters now is that we found each other," Gwen smiled. "I guess I kind of consider you all my family," she paused, thinking. "So, Holly. Have you so much as kissed anyone?"

Val was glad the mood had shifted back from its short foray into their histories. Her parents were alive they had just moved on to greener pastures when they had the chance leaving her behind to fend for herself.
"But," she thought to herself, "right now we need to have some fun because tomorrow might...bring a lot of death."
"Yeah Gwen," Val chimed in with a grin, "it would be a shame if Holly never got a chance to share a kiss."
She nudged Gwen's shoulder, "oh hey look at that Hun! There's something really interesting on that wall behind us you should look at it with me for about a minute."

Gwen looked at Val suspiciously, "Oooooookay." She turned her head slowly, wondering what Val wanted. She was pretty sure the wall was empty.

"Oh boy Gwen this wall sure is super neat!" Val exclaimed.
"It's got my full attention," she continued, "I mean, anything could be happening behind us and wouldn't know!"
Valeria cleared her throat loudly, "ANYTHING..."

Gwen stared at the wall. "I don't like this game," Gwen muttered. " How long do we have to stare at the wall for? What if I wanted to watch? If Sydney doesn't kiss Holly, can I?"

Holly burst out laughing at their antics. "Hey, I said little experience. I didn't say I had none! Boy, you girls know how to back a lady into an awkward corner." Holly sat up a little straighter. This had been mostly for a laugh. Her cheeks had turned slightly more pink.

"Yes you can watch Gwen," Val said towards the wall, "I thought we'd at least give them the illusion of privacy before we turned around to watch."

Sydney had been pretty quiet through most of the night, mostly because she was still in a little state of shell-shock after seeing her buddy gunned down in front of her. She pointed at Val and smiled. "We're adorable, you know, the funky week-old war smell aside."
When they faced the wall, Sydney raised an eyebrow at them and smiled. "This lot is never up to any good but I can't leave a gal hanging. I almost want to let you guys stare at the wall for an uncomfortable amount of time." Holly's cheeks were turning pink and Syd smiled. "Here's for our impending doom and all that," as she gave Holly a sweet kiss.

That... was more enjoyable than expected. "Oh, for fuck's sake." Holly laughed a little and blushed furiously, crossing her arms she turned and stared intently at the wall opposite the one apparently captivating Gwen and Val.
"...didn't Cal have cards or something in here?" She looked around the room avoiding the others gaze.

Sydney merely laughed and fell back on the floor. "Everyone and their walls. I'll take the ceiling, then." She heard something about cards and perked up. "Are you blushing? You're totally blushing."

Val broke her gaze from the wall to take note of the blushing tribute staring at nothing and the grinning peacekeeper staring at the ceiling.
She sighed, "Drats and we were so close..."
"One second," she added making her way to a shelf on the wall, "We kept a pack here in case of emergencies!"
Valeria laughed, "You never know when you're gonna need a deck of cards!"
"So ladies," she grinned, "what are we wagering?"

Sydney laughed when Val finally commented but she did take a moment to close her eyes because for a moment at least there was peace. When Val produced the cards, Syd forced herself to a sitting position and faced the others. "All we have to wager are these wonderful piles of dirt."

"Then by the end of the night," val exclaimed, "I will have the MOST dirt!"
"Deal me in Syd!" she added with a grin.
"This was good. Tomorrow can come. But tonight... ...this was good...."
